What is this place? What's the deal with all of the books?
Tivoli's Astounding Magic Supply Co. is the storefront for 826DC, a literary nonprofit offering free writing programs for DC students ages 6-18. That's why we also sell books! Many were written by students through the 826DC Young Authors' Project.
Why does 826DC have a magic-themed gift shop?
The very first 826 writing center, 826 Valencia, was in a building that was zoned for retail!
Inspired by the wood paneling inside, co-founders Dave Eggers and friends set up The Pirate Supply Store as a front that would raise money for the writing and tutoring programs.
The shop was a hit. The community loved it, the sales kept things running, and the whimsical space helped students feel creative, silly, and at ease.
Today, there are 826s all around the country, each with a different storefront theme! You can learn more about the other chapters and their storefronts here.
